Visas and other formalities

All types of short stay Schengen visas to metropolitan France are issued by the embassy of the Netherlands in Ghana. The embassy of France only issues long stay visas to metropolitan and overseas France, short stay visas to overseas France and short stay visas to Mauritania and the Central African Republic.

The visas section of the French embassy is opened on Friday morning only, from 08h30 to 12h00.

All applicants, except holders of diplomatic and service passport, have to book an appointment by sending an email to:

Applicants must be resident in Ghana. For non Ghanaians, it means that they must have been in Ghana for three months at least and must be holder of a residence permit.

1) SHORT STAY SCHENGEN VISAS

The embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana represents the embassy of the French Republic in Ghana for all Schengen visa matters. All applications, and possible appeals, for short stay (less than 3 months) Schengen visa to France have to be submitted to the Embassy of the Netherlands in Accra.

This means:
-  all visas for official missions to France;
-  all visas for diplomatic and service passport holders;
-  all transit visas;
-  all other categories of Schengen visa (tourism, business, études…)

Short stay visa applicants with metropolitan France as their main destination have to make online appointments to submit their applications. The website for the online booking as well as for all information on visa procedures and requirements is: http://ghana.nlembassy.org

Travellers are advised to start the procedure well in advance (in general 4 weeks prior to the intended travel date).


2) LONG STAY NATIONAL VISAS TO METROPLOLITAN FRANCE

The Embassy of the French Republic in Ghana is the only competent authority to issue long stay (over 3 months) national visas to metropolitan France.

Appointment requests have to be made by sending an email to: visas.accra-amba@diplomatie.gouv.fr

Applicants have to be specific about the ground on which they ask for an appointment (student, spouse/husband of a French national, child of a French national, other…).

From 01/11/2012 on, if you apply for certain types of long stay visas, valid as residence permits (students, spouses of French nationals, workers, trainees, scientists, spouses benefiting from family reunion, visitors), you will have to pay for the OFII tax on top of the visa fee.

Up to now, the holder of such a visa pays the tax directly to the OFII, upon arrival in France. From now on, for the sake of administrative simplification, this tax will be paid to the consulate, at the same time as the visa fee.

However, the payment of this tax to the consulate will be postponed until 01/01/2013.

The OFII tax, as well as the visa fee, is not refundable.

The main types of long stay visa are:

a) Students

Applicants wishing to study more than three months in France have to apply for a long stay visa to the French embassy.

b) Spouse/husband of French national

Applicants wishing to settle in France with their French spouse/husband have to apply for a long stay visa to the French embassy.

c) Child of French national

Applicants wishing to settle in France with their French parent (s) have to apply for a long stay visa to the French embassy.

d) Family reunion

The procedure must be initiated in France before the OFII (Office Français de l’Immigration et de l’Intégration) by the person seeking the family reunion. Visa applicants are then be contacted by the embassy.

3) SHORT AND LONG STAY VISAS TO FRENCH OVERSEAS DEPARTMENTS AND COMMUNITIES

Since French overseas departments(Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guyana, La Réunion, Mayotte) and communities (French Polynesia, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Wallis et Futuna, New Caledonia) are not part of the Schengen area, the embassy of the French Republic is the only competent authority to issue long stay as well as short stay national visas to these destinations.

4) VISAS TO THIRD COUNTRIES REPRESENTED BY FRANCE

The embassy of the French Republic is competent to issue short stay visas to the Republic of Mauritania and The Republic of Central Africa.

The day of the interview, applicants must submit a full application:
- 1 photo and the attached form.
- Proof of purpose of stay (an invitation or an explanation letter motivating your trip).
- The proof of travel dates (tickets).
- The proof of accommodation (hotel reservation for example).
- 60€ equivalent in Ghana Cedis .
