The Embassy of France in Ghana, in collaboration with the Institut Français of Ghana, is organizing the 1st Symposium on French for Professionals in Ghana, on October 14th and 15th, at the Alliance Française of Accra. The opening ceremony took place on Tuesday the 14th of October, in presence of H.E Frederic Clavier, Ambassador of France to Ghana.

Mr. Ramses Cleland, Director of Europe Bureau, to represent H.E Mrs. Hanna Tetteh, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, was the guest of honor.

In his opening speech, the Ambassador of France to Ghana, H.E Frédéric Clavier, said he believes this symposium is dedicated to a sector of cooperation which is important, not only for the bilateral relations, but also for Ghana’s cooperation with all francophone countries surrounding Ghana, as well as the other countries members of ECOWAS.

This symposium is designed for the leaders of Ghanaian institutions, teaching or wishing to teach French language for professionals in continuous training; such as the Parliament of Ghana, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and regional Integration, the GIMPA, the Volta River Authority, the Ghana Port Authority etc. Concerning initial training, public and private universities, which teach or wish to teach French language to a non-specialist public (business schools, engineering schools etc.), are present, as well as representatives of companies who choose to train their staff in French. The objective is to help them to choose the best result-oriented strategy for their trainees but also share their success and, as well as their difficulties in giving their personnel a proficiency level to work with Francophone colleagues.

By organizing this symposium, the Embassy of France expects to inform the leaders about the requirements to achieve a good training when it comes to French for special objectives, like French for professionals, and to inform both, the leaders and the teachers, about the official certifications existing in the field of professional French.

The Ambassador of France to Ghana underlined the importance to invite public and private Universities, because the teaching of French for non-specialists in the initial training remains an issue at this stage. In a context where the students in Senior High School have limited access to French, especially those enrolled in the scientific division, it is indeed difficult to give the students in business or engineering schools a sufficient level in French to give them the ability of working with francophone colleagues.

H.E Frédéric Clavier recalled that for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, the promotion of French Language remains a top priority, particularly in relations to the privileged partnership that prevails between France and Ghana, which was reaffirmed by the visit in France of President John Mahama on May 2013.
